Hay Fever - The seasonal sneezes


To me, fighting flowers with flowers seems a bit backwards. My advice for hay fever has always been ‘eat local honey,’ and to my surprise this was also mentioned by Julie Lawless in her book ‘The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy & Essential Oils Sourcebook.’ The idea behind eating local honey is that it will desensitise you to the pollen. Julie also recommends cutting down on dairy products which can cause a thickening of mucous in our sinus cavities, and also including lots of vitamin C and garlic into diet to help boost your immune system and encourage your body’s natural healing abilities.

In terms of essential oils however, the book suggests essential oils that have antihistaminic and anti-inflammatory properties (see list below). Application of these oils can be done in a variety of ways to suit your own personal needs;

🌸 A personal inhaler/ sniffy stick or a couple of drops onto a tissue that you can sniff throughout the day 🌸 Diffusing through rooms in a vaporiser 🌸 Blending into a carrier oil and massaging onto the neck/chest/back area (to appropriate dilution percentages) 🌸Inhalation by adding a few drops to a bowl of hot water and leaning over the bowl with your head covered, breathe in the steam and oils to help get those breath ways cleared! 🌸 Floral waters or hydrosols such as rose water are also a wonderfully soothing way to help sore, red eyes. Keep the bottles of rose water in the fridge to keep them cool (and to help preserve them by slowing down oxidisation), apply to a cotton pad and then gently rub them over closed eyes (following the direction of down towards your nose and then out towards your ears).

My list of recommended oils (cross referenced from a variety of sources) are: 🌼 Chamomile, peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus, lemon, ylang ylang, lavender and tea tree.
